Summary
Capcom has addressed whether the events depicted inResident Evil: The Darkside Chroniclesare canon or not. There have been dozens ofResident Evilgames released over the years, ranging from main series entries to enhanced ports to spin-offs on various platforms. Capcom has broughtResident Evilto as many gaming platforms as possible since the first game launched in 1996, and that includes the Nintendo Wii.
A variety ofResident Evilgameswere released for the Wii over the course of that console’s lifespan, including new versions of the GameCubeResident Evilgames. The Wii missed out on the new main seriesResident Evilgames that were released during its generation, but it did receive a couple of rail shooter spin-off games in the form ofResident Evil: The Umbrella ChroniclesandResident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Both games serve as retellings of established events in theResident Eviluniverse, and there’s always been debate about whether they’re canon or not. This debate was renewed when theResident Evil 4remake referenced Operation Javier, a military operation depicted inThe Darkside Chronicles.IGN interviewedResident Evil 4remake producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashito ask ifThe Darkside Chroniclesis definitively canon since it was referenced in theRE4remake, to which Hirabayashi replied, “The fact that ‘Operation Javier’ occurred is in fact part of the currentResident Evilmain story. However, as to what that mission was, it’s not exactly the same as the events portrayed inResident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.” Basically, elements ofThe Darkside Chroniclesare canon, but not 100% of the game or its depiction of Operation Javier.
The fact that ‘Operation Javier’ occurred is in fact part of the currentResident Evilmain story. However, as to what that mission was, it’s not exactly the same as the events portrayed inResident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Resident Evilfans are used to the franchise playing fast and loose with established canon, shaking things up regularly, retconning certain events, and adding new information to the lore. It was only six years after the originalResident Evilwas released that Capcom launched theResident Evilremake for the GameCube, which included brand-new character interactions, plot developments, and more that weren’t featured in the 1996 game.

Resident Evildoesn’t even stay consistent with the way its characters are portrayed. Chris Redfield is likely the most egregious example of this, as his appearance has changed dramatically.Chris Redfield looks wildly differenteven fromResident Evil 7toResident Evil Village. So while Capcom itself doesn’t seem all that terribly concerned about staying true to canon with theResident Evilgames, it is interesting to learn the company’s stance on the WiiChroniclesgames.
