December 4 means it’sDragon AgeDay for fans of BioWare’s acclaimed RPG series, and the developer has released a short cinematic teasing the upcoming sequelDragon Age: Dreadwolf. The video is narrated by one of the most recognizable voices inDragon Agefranchiseand sheds some light on the background and motivations of the game’s antagonist.

BioWare’sDragon Ageseries of RPGshas earned its place as one of the best RPG franchises in gaming. While fans may argue that the series peaked with its first entry, 2009’sDragon Age: Origins, the sequelsDragon Age 2andDragon Age: Inquisitioneach brought something new to the table and, most importantly, gave players a chance to experience BioWare storytelling at its finest. The games are well-regarded for strong world-building and player freedom, with plenty of moral dilemmas and difficult choices left up to the player. Each game also hosts a variety of intriguing companions that can be influenced positively or negatively, an element that has long been a BioWare staple.

Dragon AgeDay (December 4 being D4, or DA in leetspeak) began as a fan holiday but is now an important time of the year for BioWare, which recognizes the date with charitable events and game reveals. Today’s celebration brings a new trailer forDragon Age: Dreadwolfentitled “Who is the Dread Wolf?” which seeks to partially answer that question in a minute-long series of animated illustrations narrated by none other than the dwarf Varric, a favorite companion fromDragon Age 2andDragon Age: Inquisition. Varric’s role as the narrator seems to confirm that at least two knownDragon Agecharacters will be returning inDreadwolf: Varric, andInquisition’s Solas, otherwise known as the Dread Wolf.

Little has actually been revealed so far about the game, although development seems to be making good progress as it’s recently been announced thatDragon Age: Dreadwolfis playable from start to finish in its Alpha stage. At this point, it can be expected to come out sometime in 2023 once everything is polished, bugs are squashed, and the content is finalized.Dreadwolfwas originally intended to be an online live-service game, though to the relief of many fans the game is now a traditional offline single-player RPG.

Although it is the fourth entry in the series, BioWare has said thatDreadwolfwon’t require playing the original trilogyto understand the plot. Of course, it’s still a good idea to play through those titles to fully appreciate the world and its characters, and it’s a great way to pass the time before the next bigDreadwolfreveal.
