There’s a saying that patience is a virtue, and when it comes to video game releases, that is undoubtedly true. With every generation, players must wait for the latestUnchartedorFalloutgameto be released, with each installment usually separated by numerous years.Elden Ringis a notable example in keeping gamers stuck in anxious anticipation, but it pales in comparison to the seemingly infinite waiting time forBeyond Good and Evil 2.

An ambitious follow-up to a title that came out all the way back in 2003, Ubisoft is adamant It’s still on the way, so the question remains just how much longer players need to wait. The premise and technology on display forBeyond Good and Evil 2is without a doubt impressive, but its unclear exactly when gamers will get to play it. Countless games have been poked fun at for taking forever to be finished, such asDuke Nukem: ForeverandHalf-Life 3, and Ubisoft’s upcoming epic is well on its way to being added to that group.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 - Development Limbo

WhileElden Ringwas announced in 2019 and eventually released earlier this year, gamers feeling that is an extensive waiting period may want to take a look atBeyond Good and Evil 2’s production status. First teased all the way back in 2008 (during the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, for context), the game showed off impressive visuals for the time and promised a compelling new adventure to compliment the original. Things went quiet after this, with nothing more than a leaked gameplay video doing the rounds on the internet in 2009.

Nothing was heard about the development status ofBeyond Good and Evil 2for quite sometime until almost a decade later, when Ubisoft posted about the game on social media in late 2016, dubbing it a prequel, prior to a full-blown trailer dropping atE32017. Switching to open world gameplay and now being developed on the current gen consoles at that time (Xbox One and PlayStation 4), things finally seemed to be moving along for the project.

company acquisition franchise potential

This was until the game’s director,Michel Ancel, left Ubisoft in 2020 after reports of a disorganized work structure and an allegedly abusive environment. With the game’s director gone, it’s likely to have put the game in a state of disarray. Nothing has been shown off in the longest time, aside from Ubisoft saying that the title was coming along last Summer.

Ubisoft’s Upcoming Lineup

In fact, Ubisoft in general seems to be having some internal issues when it comes to developing its many projects. With reports of over20 new Ubisoft gameson the way, there may be too much on the company’s plate to balance all at once, even with so many talented teams at its disposal. To be fair, new installments in theFar CryandAssassin’s Creedfranchises always seem to roll around and are at the cutting edge of technology, but gamers may be clamoring for something new as well.

As mentioned,Beyond Good and Evil 2’s last formal presentation was at E3 2017, which was already 5 years ago, with still no sight of a final release date in sight. By comparison, other studios such as Insomniac have released multiple projects in the same time span. EvenFromSoftwaremanaged to launchSekiro: Shadows Die Twicein early 2019 before full committing to the development ofElden Ring.

It’s worth noting that it’s not clear what goes on behind the scenes of any game’s production, and producing a game of this caliber is likely a daunting task. Things could be shaping up very nicely forBeyond Good and Evil 2, and the team should take all the time it needs. Titles such asThe Last GuardianandFinal Fantasy 15eventually released after years in production and ended up being great experiences. Regardless of that, though,Beyond Good and Evil 2currently ranks among the games with the most ludicrously long development processes.
