During an interview withComicBook, filmmakers Benson and Moorhead expressed interest in taking on the daunting role of directingAvengers: Secret Wars. The two refrained from over-enthusiastically jumping at the possibility, instead offering a measured response. Despite finding recent success in the world of television, they explained that their roots are in independent feature films and that they’re open to returning to the format. However, they also explained that they run their Rustic Films production company, a pursuit that takes up much of their time.

I guess we would describe ourselves as filmmakers, but more specifically we’re like writer, director, actor, editors, and it’s kind of a different life than this one. But that said, there’s always this life and that life going simultaneously. We never know what the future holds. We just try to keep up

Being considered forAvengers: Secret Warscould benefit them in the long run since projects as complex as a flagship MCU movie often require directors to be skilled in all aspects of production. Benson and Moorhead became fan favorites in the MCU world after directing most ofLokiseason 2 and two episodes ofMoon Knight.Lokiseason 2 has been hailedas a return to form for Disney Plus' MCU shows, and despite failing to top its season 1 ratings, it has been considered a significant success for Marvel Studios, which has struggled recently.

It’s still unclear how Marvel Studios' decision to distance itself from Majors will affect plans. His Kang character was seemingly being set up to be the major villain of the Multiverse Saga that ends withAvengers: The Kang DynastyandAvengers: Secret Wars. Thanks to the franchise widely using the multiverse concept, simplyrecasting Kang is a likely option. Or, fans may see a slight restructuring in which villains will face off withThe Avengersin future films.

TheSecret Warscomic books featured Doctor Doom as the primary villain. While he’s not appeared in the MCU yet, he may be introduced to fill the void left by Kang. However, the threat of Kang’s character has been extensively built up in recent MCU releases, so it’s hard to see the franchise completely ditching the character. No matter what Marvel Studios decides, fans should be excited that new heroes, like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, will likely team up with some ofthe classicAvengerscharactersto save the universe again.

Avengers: Secret Warsis scheduled to be released in theaters on June 19, 2025.
