Summary
AMDhas allegedly experienced a data breach that may have led to a number of private documents and information being stolen.AMDhas officially confirmed that the company is investigating the matter with the aid of law enforcement officials.
Data breaches on the internet have become unfortunately common for large companies. Over the years, many game publishers and developers have been hit and had valuable data stolen, including - but not limited to - Nintendo, Insomniac,Sony, and Ubisoft. They’re not alone, as social media services like Twitch and Facebook as well as retailers like Humble Bundle have been hit over the last five years. Data breaches like these often result in valuable internal data like in-development projects and source code leaking, as well as personal information for customers and employees.
Unfortunately, AMD is allegedly one of the latest companies to get hit in a data breach. A hacker alleged that they had access to a wide variety of AMD data that they were interested in selling on June 17. According to the individual, the data includes employee databases, customer databases, source code, financial information, firmware, spec sheets, and details onfuture AMD products. The allegedly stolen employee data includes full names, job positions, and phone numbers, though it isn’t clear if the customer breach is as extensive or even moreso.
In a statement toBloomberg, AMD has stated that it’s currently investigating the claim and whether any data stolen, if any, is actually significant.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that AMD has faced a data breach, as something similar happened back in 2022. While the privacy and safety of AMD’s employees and customers is important, this leak could also spell bad news for the company’s future and existing products.Source code leaks, in particular, can lead to exploits being discovered that could pose a risk to users. However, it’s not clear if any of the alleged data being sold is legitimate at this time.
Data Leaks Impact Users Regardless of Password Security
While users of any website or service are always encouraged to use unique and complex passwords, there’s nothing individuals can do about theoverall cybersecurity a company utilizes, or the relentless attacks corporations can face. If a server is broken into externally or someone uses pilfered login information to gain access, user account data can potentially be accessed regardless of user password strength. AMD customers shouldn’t panic, and if the leaked data turns out to be legitimate, the company will presumably notify impacted parties.
