The Monsters of Alone in the Dark
Due to its nature as a survival-horror title,Alone in the Darkpossesses sinister, grotesque, and supernatural enemies akin to themore popularResident Evilseries. Alongside intense exploration and puzzle solving, one of the largest parts ofAlone in the Dark’sgameplay is combat with a variety of ominous enemies, which leads to the expected resource management and healing mechanics one might be looking for in the genre.
The many disturbing monsters ofAlone in the Darkcan be attributed to the tormented spirit of a 17th Century pirate named Ezechiel Pregzt, who became a prominent plantation owner and built the accursed Derceto Mansion. A lifetime occult enthusiast, Pregzt’s spirit was infused into the grounds of Derceto, with his post-mortem form carrying the same cruel and vindictive characteristics that he possessed in life.
Alone in the Darkplayers will most commonly encounter an enemy-type known as Ghouls, which are a form of zombiesreanimated and possessed by the nefarious Pregzt. These zombies are widely considered to be former servants of Jeremy Hartwood, a renowned artist whose suicide within Derceto Mansion led to the events ofAlone in the Dark. With Pregzt likely influencing Jeremy’s madness and suicide, the supernatural being has been manifesting occult beings within the mansion for an untold period of time.
The player also encounters reanimated suits of armor duringAlone in the Dark, giving credence to the intense levels of power that Pregzt possesses from beyond the grave. Monsters withinAlone in the Darkcan also seemingly come from outside the earthly plain, with aggressive bipedal “demon chickens” and an aquatic race known as the “Deep Ones” also terrorizing players throughout the game. There are even monsters such as the Cthonian that disobey the will of Pregzt, suggesting his interactions with the supernatural has gone beyond what even he can control. With theupcoming remake forAlone in the Darklikely having a grander scale of monsters, the possibilities for exploration regarding the supernatural will be interesting to see.
Alone in the Darkis currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
