Back in 1987, a partnership between comic book publisher Mirage Studios and toy creator Playhouse Toys would launch theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesfranchise with a cartoon that would spark a craze spanning generations. Each new iteration of the turtles brings new enemies, challenges, and allies into the canon. This next iteration of theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesis no different, with plenty ofTMNT’s classic villains (and allies) as well as some new ones. In order for the new beat-em-upTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revengeto be successful, there will need to be plenty of interesting enemies to beat up. In the new cinematic trailer, complete with beautiful animations, players have gotten a look at who and what they can expect to face off against.

InTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge,Raph, Mikey, Leo, and Donnie will take a trip back to the arcade machines and face off against a variety of pixelated enemies in this homage to classic beat-em-ups. This newTMNTgame will show the turtles facing off against the combined forces ofShredder and Krangas they try to enact their evil plan. Players will have to work with up to three other friends to fight the evil forces and take back their city.Shredder’s Revengetakes special inspiration from the original 1987 cartoon, as well as the games that followed it.

The Baddies are Back

Before players can face off against Shredder and Krang, they will have to make their way through the streets and sewers of the classic 1987 TV show. Some of the most apparent enemies in the new trailer are the Foot Soldier minions who work for Shredder. They’re the lower level members of his clan and serve as disposable pawns that buy time more than actual threats to the turtles. The Foot Soldiersare fairly dumb and have trouble making decisions on their own, soBebop and Rocksteadywill be leading the charge in the assault on Channel 6. When the turtles are forced into Dimension X, they may also have to fight against Krang’s Rock Soldiers from the original series.

Drawing from the 1987 cartoon,Shredder’sRevengewill see many famous supervillains from the classic series. For example, the trailer showsZorax, seemingly implying the inclusion of the Triceraton Empire seeking to rob Earth of its resources. Another animated scene features the mad scientistBaxter Stockmanin his fly form, chasing after an airborneDonatello. But the turtles won’t be doing it alone, as the trailer showcases a variety of allies that fans will recognize.

New Guys

The reveal trailer mostly pays respects to the 1987 cartoon that started it all. However, there are still a few unrecognizable figures looming over the heroes. Specifically, the giantmechanized version of Shredderthat stands over Leonardo’s silhouette is something new. Although he looks daunting, Leo challenges him fearlessly. There are also varyingcolors of Foot Soldiersthat may denote difficulty, which is different from the cartoon it’s based on. This isn’t a surprising mechanic, asTMNT’shardest video gamehas used this in the past to add variety to the same scenarios.

Many fans are excited aboutTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge, but there is also the caution that comes with each new iteration of a beloved franchise. This game has placed extra weight on itself by choosing to be faithful to the original 1987 cartoon. While there have been somepoorly reviewedTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlegamesin recent years, its publisher Dotemu has experience in the beat-em-up genre and developer Tribute Games seems to be serious about paying respect to the first entry. There is no release date forShredder’s Revengeyet, but that hasn’t stopped the hype from old and new fans ofTMNTalike.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revengeis in development for PC and console.
